A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and adjacent tissue. It is designed to improves chewing ability and speech, and provide support for facial muscles – greatly enhancing your facial appearance and smile.
Types Of Dentures
A full denture replaces all the teeth, whilst a partial denture fills in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevents other teeth from changing position. These standard dentures are made from plastic (acrylic) or metal and are traditionally rigid. At Ashton & Lonsdale Dental Practices we can also offer flexible partial dentures.
These are made without the use of a metal frame and are instead manufactured from strong, durable plastic. The plastic used is so strong that the partial denture can be made very thin, eliminating the heavy, bulky feel you can often get with more traditional dentures. A flexible partial denture is virtually invisible because there are no telltale metal clasps and the material itself blends with the tissue in your mouth.
Ever thought of dental implants?
An alternative to dentures is dental implants. These can be used to support bridges, eliminating the need for a denture altogether. Another option is to make a denture more secure by placing mini implants which act like the root of a tooth. The head of the implants protrude from the gum tissue and provide a strong, solid foundation for securing the dentures.
